I can still vividly recall myself suffering from the stomach discomfort on day 1, making numerous trips to the toilet. And also having to tape up my left ankle (day 4) and having to be very careful with every step, and also having many undeveloped blisters (throughout the race) on both feet (which may be worse than having blisters).
Truly, I want to say thank you for all your prayers and your unwavering support that energised me and the thought of all of you really spurred me on to put one foot in front of the other till I reached the end point for each stage and finally, to the end of the whole 250km run!
I hope to be able to share more with you when I am back. Till we meet again, take care and see you real soon!
I'll be back in Singapore, my homeland, on Mon, 18 June. Ciao!
15 June 2012 05:06 am (GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore
Thank God that I have just completed the long march, about 15mins ago! (10.20pm local time; we started at 10am today.)
Wow! I really can’t believe the terrain, the weather and everything. It started with the blazing heat, followed by the extremely strong wind, coupled with rain, and back to bright and sunny day again. It was an unforgettable day!
I had a compatriot walking with me for the first 8km, and thereafter, I had to walk on my own. The only thing I could do was walk, and to put one foot in front of the other. The blisters that didn’t developed in the first 4 days finally surfaced. I am not sure how bad it is as I have yet to take out my shoes and socks. I rushed straight to cybertent so that I can send this blog asap.
At 10.30pm in the night, I should be sleepy, tired and hungry, yes that’s how I am feeling. I will not write too much. I just want to let everyone know that I am alright and thank you for your prayers.
I want to dedicate this long and difficult march (76km or so) to my family (including my sis & bro), cousins, colleagues, friends and army buddies, and everyone that supported me and the cause (fundraising for SDSC). Thank you so much.
One more day and I can dream of laksa, fried kway teow, prata etc.
And to my family, once again, I LOVE YOU! J

“We are one, marching on,
We are the young defenders of the country.
Moving on we believe, that we can achieve
So let us serve our home Singapore.”
I would like to dedicate today’s stage to Howard, member of 8/92 OCC Bravo 4.
Stage 4, Bravo 4! We will remember you Howard!
Today’s run was really tough! And if I may use the phrase that I like to use, it was super mega ultra difficult!
I really appreciate all the outdoor activities that I did through the years, the army training that I’ve been through. Preparation for a race like Gobi Desert does not start 6 months prior to the race. I realized this as I was walking up every hill (some 50-60m in length) and also tried to come down safely. The previous experience that I’ve gained, esp Mt Kinabalu Expedition (6 times with KRSS) really helped me. Of course those days in Bravo Coy also played a big part.
The other 3 buddies of mine did not feel too good yesterday after their run yesterday. Please uphold them in your prayers. I hope they are coming back soon as I type this email. I sprained my ankle at the 30km mark. It is holding up as of now. Do pray for speedy recovery.
Thank you to all who have left a note for me. I will prepare myself for the penultimate stage (5&6, 2 in 1) tomorrow, the longest and perhaps the hardest, a 80km march. I would probably finish at around 10pm, but I will still blog about the run.
Dear, Lendal, Kayla & Jenna, I will be back soon! I love all of you! J
Now it’s time to go and take my lunch, instant noodles, yummy! (fyi: 8:18 today)

Praise the Lord once again for being able to be at the startline! It is His mercies that I was able to start Stage 3, 36km run with very punishing hills. Sleep was moderate and nutrition was ok. Sis, I have been eating the nutrifacts. Don't worry.
We were told of the today's terrain and that it was going to be tougher than the previous 2 stages. Today, I was killed, buried and ...
I am not sure if there can be other words that can be used to descirbe the difficult course that we have been through.
How I wish I could turn back the clock where in younger times, I could just leapfrog and gallop from one place to another, even in the trails and the woods. I would really recommend those who are trying Gobi to run at MacRitchie, walk more trails, and do more off-road trying. Even if it is pure walking, it is going to do you a lot of good.
5:42 and top 30 for the day. That was really a morale booster for me!
Koon Way, Mike, Chin, Jolie, Anthony, Jeff, Kin Yew, Lynne, Kath, Raja, thank you for your encouraging words and your prayers. I will press on, knowing that I am preparing for the all important and very challenging long march Stage 5 (76km).
Dear, continue your workout with Audrey. Keep up the good work! And I may just bring Lendal here in 10 years' time. Will explain to you more on 18 June, which is not too far away.
LENDAL, KAYLA & JENNA, Papa here! Continue to be good ok! Dad loves all of you! :)
Take care and I'll write again!

Hi guys & gals,
Thank God once again for being able to be at the startline and also being able to complete day 2, 39km.
Why do I say that? My stomach was more or less cleared. And though I walked most of the course from CP3 to CP4, I made it up for the lost time by running the last 11km. It was like the happy time since I arrived in China. I know you have been praying for me and I really appreciate that.
I have shared with some of you about Ironman Triathlon in Japan also in the month of June in 2008. Not sure if you can recall that. I must tell you that if I have mentioned that the hills were killing, today's stage really have you buried. There were numerous ups and downs and it was Mount Kinabalu revisit. Every step had to be with extra care & caution, failing which an ankle may be twisted and a knee injured. Thank God for your prayers for safety.
I have more or less recovered and pray that the next few days will be better in terms of enjoying the run and companionship.
To Aaron, Soon Liang, Shaw Terk, Lee San, Stacey, Chin, glad to hear from you. I will enjoy my run and think of your encouraging words.
To my dear, I love you and also Lendal, Kayla and little Jenna! Take care ok! I will take care of myself, I promise.
Btw, I did 5:53 today and made up a little bit of lost time. Thank God once again!

I am indeed thankful to God for seeing me through day 1 of the race. Though the timing was fantastic and nowhere near what I expected, I am very thankful that I have completed and have day 1 under my belt.
“Expected the unexpected”. That’s what I used to tell others.
It definitely applies to me for this race. It must have been the anxiety and/or the food that I ate. I was feeling discomfort in my stomach on Sat at around 4pm when we were transported to the base camp for the start of stage.
I consulted the race doctor and took some medicine. The rest of the night was not good. I vomited once and woke up several times. I didn’t have a good sleep.
At the start point on Sun 10 June, I was trying not to think of the discomfort. I managed to run for most part of the 1st 22km. Thereafter, I walk / run the rest of the race.
Well, it was an experience and I did think of conserving my energy for the other 6 days.
Ok, it’s time to take a nap and get some rest so that I can do better tomorrow. Thank you for your prayers and support back home. Do leave me some comments. I believe it will uplift my spirit when I read.

After taking the flight that brought me across almost the entire width of China, from Guangzhou to Urumqi and subsequently to Kashgar, I am finally here at Tianyuan Hotel where we will have our briefing & check-in later in the morning (9 June).
I still can't really believe this, that I will be running a marathon everyday and on the 5th day a back-to-back marathon. It will then be followed by a finale of 10km run where I guess many will take it easy for the final day's workout and cherish every moment of it.
I am really looking forward to arriving at the base camp, some 4-hr drive away from Tianyuan where we will stay for the night before the 9th edition of the Gobi March gets underway.
I have to trust in God for each step of the way and enjoy and treasure the whole process! I thank God for the privilege and the opportunity to do this.
To all who supported me and are rooting for me back home in Singapore and also other parts of the world, thank you very much once again!
Hope to bring you good news soon! Ciao! Adious!

This is my last entry before going off to the airport en route to Kashgar, Xinjiang China.
It will be a joyful occasion where many will be there to send me off. But it is going to be difficult to part with my family. My wife, Rachel, will have to take care of my little ones at home.
Thank God there is help provided by domestic helpers and mother-in-law. Never this people around you for granted!
Lendal, Kayla & Jenna, Papa loves all of you! Please be good and listen to mom, jie jie and ma ma ok!
Bee, as my wife is known as to me and her family, I love you! Take care and I will be back real soon!
To the rest out there rooting for me, thank you for all your support and donation (to Singapore Disability Sports Council, SDSC) for a good cause!
I will do my best, and within my limits, and hope to bring back good news and share the wonderful experience!
Ganbette! Till we meet again, Ciao!

5 more days to go before the big one. Feeling excited is an understatement. Feeling jittery, edgy, butterflies in the stomach, feeling the heat and the adrenalin rush! These are probably some for the descriptions one can think of.
I will be beginning my journey in 2 days' time at the airport. I would need to take 3 flights before reaching Kashgar. Another day of briefing and on the same day, taking transportation to Base Camp. One more night at the Base Camp and thereafter...
That's it! The race begins....
I will always remember this phrase:
"You do what you can to prepare,
To make sure you feel good on race day.
To not get kick in the face,
To leave enough in you for the 138 miles (226km) that is to come.
You do what you can,
and then...
There'll still be a lot more."
The context for the above is that of a commentator giving his take at the start of an Ironman Triathlon race in Hawaii. I guess it is somehow the same.
As I have mentioned to my friends, I think no amount of preparation can really help you to be 100% ready for any race. Nonetheless, I have done all I can and I will do my best for the race. I hope to give a report for the race when I am back in Singapore. I need to trust God in every step I take.
Till we meet again, ciao!

31.88km, 3:16:42, 6:11 avg. Who cares about statistics! It was my penultimate training session this morning for my Gobi Desert Run 10-16 June. The final session being tomorrow’s Sundown Marathon. This back-to-back training is quite common for endurance training.
But the real hit came when I attempted the full 42km the following day, which is this morning. With sleep deprivation and not conditioned to take the beating, and also the passing on of good buddy, I think I did the right thing by not pushing the unnecessary. I guess the real thing will start on 10 June. All the preparation will pay off if the nutrition aspect is spot on and everything falls into place.
All the way! 14 days to go!

Today's training was supposed to be a simple run with a selected group of people, my ex-students. However, I think many were held up by work and other personal matters. Perhaps I have to organise another session.
10.5km in under an hour. Shorter distance and faster time. I think it just gives the confidence a big lift! And for the record, it is 16 days to go, and counting!

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this.
My platoon-mate, Howard Woon Tai Hou, from OCS recently went into coma. He had a cardiac arrest when he was at Thailand. He has been in ICU for the past 2 weeks (now back in S’pore).
· We must believe in the impossible! When the doctors in Thailand said that he had passed on, the family refused to give up. After many attempts to resuscitate him, he finally started to breathe. He has since been on life support system. Nothing is sealed and confirmed till it is over. He has been fighting for the past 14 days and we brothers from 8/92 Bravo 4 will continue to stand by his side and continue to support and encourage his family. We will not give up!
· As comrades, friends or colleagues, we must stand together in times like this. We can support one another, and give hope to each other.
· Press on Howie! Please pray for Howard!

It was an impromptu 3-day run. Distance for all the 3 days was a little shorter than the normal that I have been doing. Nonetheless, I felt that it was good. It helped me gained confidence, know that I am able to pick up speed if necessary.
13km, 13km & followed by 18km were I did from Thur to Sat. Average pace – 5:50!
It was really a morale booster as I know that I have not lost any speed while training for greater stamina and endurance. I should be able to attain gold for IPPT if I have a go at it now.
22 days to go and I am having butterflies in my stomach! Soon it will be sending off at the airport, followed by long journey to Kashgar, and then race brief and finally race proper.
How will it turn out? Am I able to endure the heat, and the sand? Can my legs take it? Can I recuperate well? etc. All these questions are no stranger to us, the competitors but it definitely.
Well, I must trust in the Lord to help me and lead me in every step of the way.
Keep the spirit high as we prepare for the challenge!
**And to my bro who is fighting for his life at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Howard you must continue to fight on in true Bravo 4 spirit, never give up brother! We are fighting on with you!

I have ran on trails previously, but never for should a long distance - 34km. I really hope that it would not be should condition and terrain at the actual race. Having to watch the steps is bad enough, but it gets tougher when there are many upslope. It was really a test of endurance with a 12kg backpack on my back. It is really not a joke!
I did the 10.5km route in MacRitchie. In all, I did 3 loops. It was an eye-opener. The 1st round was quite alright with the journey rather smooth going. Round 2 was a little tougher with the load seemingly getting heavier. It's natural as you are getting more tired as the run progresses. Each step seems a little heavier and the legs just can't be lifted up easily. The split time was 1:28 and 1:29 respectively for the 1st 2 rounds.
Thank God for giving me the extra strength for the 3rd round. I have not been hitting the track for long distance since 1 May. The most was 16km. Today's run was really good to gauge up for the race, with 29 days to the actual day - 10 June.
The split time for round 3 was 1:24. It was surprisingly an improved timing.
I am really uplifted by the fact that many are giving to the Singapore Disability Sports Council, SDSC, the organisation that I am raising funds for.

The above was what I wrote in the last post. For the last 2 sessions of this programme, it was like 72km in 18hrs with 4hrs of sleep. It was really a test, especially the last session.
I had to re-adjust my plans due to unforseen circumstances. Nonetheless, I ran with my training partners. The last session started with a swelled right foot. Then the pace was slow and the strides shortened due to fatigue. Mentally, I have learnt to be strong and be prepared for anything. It was like my first IM Tri at WA when I almost cried due to the fact that I can't even run at the final leg. This time, I tried to go slow and then pick up the pace at the distance increases. Started with a modest 8:30 and was brought down to 8:00 by the end of a 42km run.
I am indeed thankful to God for giving me the strength to hang in there. There were moments where I really wanted to give up. I believe this will happen again at Gobi. This is really a give prelude to the actual thing.
Will share more again. Ciao!

28 April 2012 04:51 am (GMT+08:00) Kuala Lumpur, Singapore
Last Friday was really hot. I was struggling with the heat and if I had started earlier, I think I might have been totally burnt. Nonetheless I enjoyed the sunset at Pandan Reservoir (3 loops in total) save the flies that came from nowhere.
Yesterday was a challenge too. Having not ran on trails for a long time, I started at a modest pace. A wrong turn at one of the corners caused me to slip and I fell, scrapping my knee-cap. My partner and I made a few more wrong turns as we were not familiar with the terrain. When we reached Mandai Road, it was a relief. Back to flat road again. From then on, I managed to push myself and did an overall timing that was better than Friday.
This morning, with less than 6 hours of sleep in 2 days, I had to drag myself out of bed for the 3rd session. I believe it will be the same at Gobi where the body just wants more rest. I guess it will be mind over body and that definitely must prevail.
In total, 90km in 36hrs with a total of less than 7hrs of sleep. I am just wondering whether I will be able to survive the next 2 days, with the ultimate test on May Day (the simulated long march).
In summary,
Fri: 7:19 (pm)
Sat: 7:14 (am)
Sun: 7:36 (mn)
Thank you to those who have been encouraging me in one way or another. I wouldn't have been able to make it if not for all your support. And to my beloved wife Rachel, thank you for being very understanding and taking care of our 3 little darlings while I am training.
To my 3 children, be good and listen to mom when dad is not around. Love you!

I must get mentality prepared for it. It is going to like what I will probably face in Gobi, hot and dry, lack of rest, feeling all the body aches, plus all that you can imagine and think of.
Am I ready? I have try my best for this 5-day programme for it will really set the tone and it will also give me a true gauge of where I stand.
All the way! (By the way, I will be doing it with my 2 other fellow participants.)

I finally get to run under the hot sun for 2 consecutive days. It was a great feeling, except for the unforseen situation where one of the straps on my backpack broke and gave way. Fortunately it happened during practice run. I am not sure how things will turn out if it happened during the actual Gobi March. One lesson will be to train and prepare for the race, but expect the unexpected.
63 days & counting! Getting very excited about the whole thing and having mixed feelings. It is going to be an experience of a lifetime!
I am looking forward to the next 5-day training programme. It will be from 27 Apr to 1 May. It will probably be the final preparation before the big race. I am bracing myself for it! It will also be a gauge of where I stand at that point in time.
Keep on going my fellow participants at the Gobi March 2012!

40km and almost the entire run was in the rain, again!
Nonetheless, I am very happy with the 5-day training, culminating in the 40km lng run.
Did 7:48. Expected to get more tired as the days progress and really it has taken the effect on my aching body. I think as least mentally I am more prepared for the tough times at Gobi. Really hoping to get one better in the next 5-day set, be it in timing or heavier load etc.
More running with load in the extreme hot sun in Singapore will definitely do me good.
For now, I am searching for the solution to numbness at my right arm. It happened almost immediately as soon as I started my 40km run yesterday. I can still feel the effects now. Blood circulation, strap too tight etc.
There is learning in every run! Press on my fellow participants in the buildup towards the big day! 87 days to go.

I finally get to run in the hot sun of Singapore. Really very hot!
30-32 degree C. Can't imagine how 40 degree C will be like!
Hopefully this 5-day rehearsal will allow me to get a feel of what will happen and help me to prepare better for 10 June!

Sure it will be painful but I have to experience it. I am sure it is going to prepare me in terms of what to expect in Gobi. It will definitely be of help before the actual event in June.

I also had the opportunity to meet some of my fellow participants (in Singapore) in the evening. It was really great as we get to know each other and shared some of our training concerns. Perhaps we can arrange to have a session or two where we can get together for a simple run and workout.
Hi people, remember we have only 99 days left. Keep the mileage going!

Nonetheless, the bag gets heavier with all the water droplets and the backpack getting wet. And soon, tomorrow, it will be 100 days left to the race. Let's continue to stay focused and work towards the goal at Gobi.
Meeting those from Singapore going for the race on Saturday, 3 March. Hope to be able to make it and have some sharing and also to encourage one another.

A reminder that we are 5 months from our event has been sent to us. It is a good time to take stock and monitor our progress, including our food intake. It is also a good time to train during this holiday period.
Running with load is no longer an issue. The issue is whether how long we can last with the load and when to increase the load to about 10-12kg, the average load.
All the way my fellow participants as we shift up a gear or 2! Happy New Year!

It started off quite alright at the beginning. The load on my back does not seem that heavy. With my training partner beside me, we were able to cheer each other on when the going gets tough, e..g. going up a slope etc.
It was not until the 26km when I parted ways with my buddy that I started to feel a little anxious. In every marathon, everybody waits anxiously after the 30-32km mark to see if the "wall" is coming. It came at the 32km mark for me this time. With little preparation for this "StanChart" run, it was understandable that I began to feel uneasy.
Each step got a little heavier and the stride length shortened. But the thought of shower after the run, the food and drinks at the market just spurred me on to "quickly" finish the run. The most difficult portion was at Pandan Reservoir where the loop just seems endless. At last, when the round slightly more than 6km was completed, the joy came knowing that in a matter of 20mins or so, I would be completing the run.
Honestly, I would rather suffer and "enjoy" the pain and feel uneasy now than to feel the almost unimagineable & excruciating pain under the hot sun of Gobi. I really don't want to suffer big time and that is why all the training sessions leading up to the race would be necessary.
I must thank God for enabling me to persevere on despite the inadequate preparaton. Also a big thank you to Lay Peng, my training partner.I finally finished the run before 9am.
As I move towards the big challenge, I hope all the experience gained along the way will be of great help for me in future, both in my working life and also my weekend hobby, sporting activities.

I have really got to get used to it. Otherwise, I will suffer "big time" come June 2012. I shall share more of the run I did yesterday with my training buddy later in the day. Got to get to work now.

I will attempt my first marathon carrying my bagpack. I will carry a 6kg bagpack for a start.
I will also be running with my regular training partner, Lay Peng. She will also be going for Gobi March in June 2012. She has always been an inspiration to me. And I believe we will be able to make progress from now till June 2012.
Hopefully, I can post my comments again with much experience gained!

I hope to complete each stage within the cut-off time and also complete the entire race within a target time. I am still thinking what target time to set for myself.
Till the next post, I will be hitting the road & trails for good and quality training sessions.
